In our school (and I believe this is also happening in other schools), we always experience an influx of new teachers at the beginning of every semester, especially at the beginning of the academic year. Almost always, new teachers find it challenging to adapt into the culture of the school and at the same time adapt to our curriculum. Almost always, these new teachers come from different backgrounds and almost always, they are not familiar with the IB PYP. This has caused all Primary School leaders (the PYP coordinators and assistant coordinators from all campuses) to come up with an Induction Programme. This is a nine-session programme that gives an overview of what the IB PYP believes in.
Session 1- Introduction to the PYP
Session 2- The Written Curriculum (Part 1)- Knowledge, PYP Attitude
Session 3- The Written Curriculum (Part 2)- Skills, Key Concepts, Action
Session 4- The Taught Curriculum (Part 1)- Inquiry and Constructivism
Session 5- The Taught Curriculum (Part 2)- Differentiation
Session 6- The Assessed Curriculum (Part 1)- Assessing, Reporting and Recording
Session 7- The Assessed Curriculum (Part 2)- Rubrics and Task Generation
Session 8- Programme Scope and Sequence
Session 9- Summative Assessment (Mock Teaching)
For this semester 1, we had around 13 new teachers who participated into this programme. Week after week, we uncovered what PYP is and reflected onto what we have been doing in class.
